Give Me A Break!

The EAT has held that compensatory rest breaks must be taken in one uninterrupted period - a series of shorter breaks cannot be aggregated to make up the required period.

The Tribunal so held in determining that a railway signalman manning a single-manned signal box must be given a full 20min rest break.

Even though there were typically only six trains an hour the signalman could be called on at any time and had to continually monitor his post, resulting in a number of periods of broken rest.
