Unofficial Strikes - Message Apps

The Independent Workers Union has warned that online messaging providers such as WhatsApp are being used by workers in the ‘gig’ economy and self employed contractors to effectively organise unofficial strikes.

They were used to organise meetings and  co-ordinate their unavailability to work.

Employers with a large number of self employed contractors and workers on zero hours contracts are particularly at risk. The self employed, in particular, are not bound by the law on strikes.
